Meet Your New Principal


Dr. Devan Nicely was born and raised in Alleghany County. After graduating from Alleghany High School, he attended college at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College and Virginia Military Institute, where he majored in history with a minor in English.


Dr. Nicely was commissioned into the United States Army as a Military Intelligence officer. He served in that capacity, and in the reserves, for 8 years, a time that included deployments to Iraq, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan.


After his military service, Dr. Nicely began his career in education by earning a license to teach secondary social studies through Mary Baldwin College while teaching adult education classes in Fairfield. He began teaching in Roanoke City Public Schools while working with at-risk students. While in Roanoke City, he earned a masters degree in Executive Leadership, a masters degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision, and a graduate certificate in General Business from Liberty University while simultaneously earning a graduate certificate in American History from American Military University.


In July of 2017, Dr. Nicely left Roanoke City Public Schools to become the assistant principal of Mountain View Elementary School in Low Moor. During this tenure at MVES, he earned his Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and an Educational Doctorate from Liberty University.


Dr. Nicely is married to Marie Nicely, a local health care provider, and together they have three children. They live on a farm in Rockbridge County. Dr. Nicely has attended church at Lexington Baptist Church, where he has maintained family and community ties to the area for more than 30 years.
